Authorship:

(no internal evidence as to the author).
The early church fathers recognized Matthew as the writer.
Structure:
Matthew wrote thematically.
Structure similar to plywood, alternating 6 Narrative/5 teaching segments. Each teaching segment ends with the word finished;
“When Jesus finished saying these things” or something similar.

Purpose:
1) To the show continuity between the OT & the mission of
Jesus as Messiah.
- often quotes OT prophecies about Jesus
2) Written to serve as a polemic against the critics of Jesus.
- addressed the strongest critics in 1st century, Jews who denied Jesus as Messiah
3) Instruction for Christians about ethical implications of their faith.
- adherence to Law of Moses no longer adequate standard
